Also note that most events are offered rain, snow or shine. Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots are
recommended for outdoor activities. Please dress for the weather and bring a hat and water bottle. Space is

Location: rare ECO Centre Slit Barn and Farmhouse, 781 Blair Rd. in Cambridge
There is so much for your children to look forward to in our Summer ECO Camps!
We will explore vernal streams, wetlands, vernal herbs and edible wilds, as well as observing migrating birds, and other signs of wildlife on our trails. Children will also take part in our ECO Crafts activities and will create a journal of their time spent at rare.
Open to all children between 6 and 12 years of age each week, and will have specialized programming available. Cost: $125 per child for 5 full days of supervision and quality programming. Additional care (early pick-up, late drop-off ) is available upon request.

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND …
Gardening for Beginners, a six class series: Taking the mystery out of growing your own vegetables.
Join our Garden’s Manager, Amanda Newell for a series of six (6) garden seminars that will turn any beginner gardener into a confi dent and knowledgeable grower. This series is designed for people new to gardening or new to gardening in this region or climate. It is an introduction; it covers the basics and gives plenty of opportunity to ask questions throughout each class.
Composting, seed starting, seed saving, garden planning, tools of the trade, maintenance techniques, pest
control, and harvest methods are only some of the many topics to be covered over the course of six (6) weeks.
Classes will be held Wednesday nights (6:30 pm – 8:00 pm) starting on March 21 and fi nishing April 25.

SPRING WILDFLOWERS AND VERNAL HERBS HIKE with Sarah Walker, Education Coordinator

Location: The rare Administrative Centre, 1679 Blair Road, Cambridge
Watch where you step! During the Spring something magical happens at rare. Join Sarah Walker for an
interactive hike along the Riverside Trail in our Cliffs & Alvars area to discover the splendor of Spring
wildflowers and vernal herbs. Blood Root, Wild Ginger, Harbinger of Spring, and various other wildflowers
and herbs will be introduced and interpreted. Various field guides will be introduced and a portion of the
hike will be dedicated to ‘independent exploration’ where you will have time to make a discovery of your own!
We will also examine traditional uses, Native Canadian uses, and folklore traditions involving the plants in
question. Cost: $8.00 ($3.00 with rare Event Discount Card)

SALAMANDERS AT rare!
– An interactive talk and hike

Cambridge and then depart to the hiking trail Leadback, Eastern Redback, Yellow Spotted, and Blue Spotted
salamanders can be found on rare property - if you know where to look! Join rare Environmental Advisor, Mark Pomeroy for an interpretive hike to look for salamanders on the Grand Trunk Trail. Mark will expose several different salamanders, how to identify them, and where to find them. This hike will give you the information you need to look for salamanders in your own forest or backyard. Cost: $8.00 ($3.00 for rare Event Discount Card holders)

BIRD BANDING DEMONSTRATION

Location: Meet at rare’s ECO Centre Slit Barn and Farmhouse, 768 Blair Road in Cambridge
Banding birds has provided valuable information to researchers about bird ecology, migration routes and
population dynamics. A group of volunteers led by bird bander Kevin Grundy have been banding birds during the spring and fall migrations at rare since 2008. Join us for a close-up look at what is involved in
bird banding. Observe how the birds are captured, banded and learn about the kinds of information that are
collected from each bird before they are released. You will have a unique opportunity to observe close up some
of the bird species that breed at rare or migrate through the property on their way north. Children are most
welcome, come explore birds at rare – up close and personal! Cost: $8.00 ($3.00 with a rare Event Discount

What’s that loud peeping sound I hear in the spring? Spring Peepers of course! Join rare Environmental Advisor mark Pomeroy for an interpretive hike where you’ll learn to identify Spring Peepers, and all of Ontario’s other frogs and toads by their unique calls. Cost: $8.00 ($3.00 with a rare Event Discount Card)

CAMBRIDGE CENTRE fOR THE ARTS PRESENTS PAINTING AND DRAWING AT rare
First Class: May 26, 2012 from 1:30 to 4:30 pm

Location: The Cambridge Centre for the Arts, 60 Dickson Street in Cambridge
There will be 4 Saturday afternoon (1:30 pm – 4:30 pm) classes at rare – June 2, June 9, June 16 and June 23.
In case of rain, classes will take place on the Sunday.
Learn to make art inspired by nature on location at the rare Charitable Research Reserve in Cambridge. With
over 900 acres of preserved habitats, a treasure of subjects will capture your imagination. Each week a diff
erent location will be visited, including old growth forests, cliff s and the Grand River flood plain. Artist
Nicole Waddick will teach you how to capture the beauty of the area in watercolours, oil pastels and coloured
pencils. Suitable for all levels. Cost for the course is $75 (Arts Centre Members $54) + materials (see
